Given the number of other events on this date it was pleasing to welcome 114 entrants to this year’s race. I was delighted to see Simon Bailey, the newly-crowned FRA Champion supporting the race, which he won in a very good time considering the very wet conditions. There was very keen competition in all the veteran sections, as well as good performances by Tom Cornthwaite and Anthony Hayes in the U20 and U18 sections. A super run by Vanessa Peacock brought about a comfortable win in the ladies’ race. She is still showing the younger runners a clean pair of heels. My sincere thanks go to the landowners, who allowed access to their land, also to the loyal band of helpers and marshals whose hard work ensured that the race went ahead smoothly and the results were produced efficiently. I would like to make special mention of Paul Healey and the Clayton X Team, a fine bunch of athletes whose levels of ability and fitness are far too high to allow them to take part in the race. For many years, on race day they have run over from Accrington to Thieveley in order to marshal checkpoints approaching the trig point. They then de-flag part of the course and run back to Accrington. Well done to one and all!
