CAPTAINS REPORTS/RESULTS
Northern Road Relays Championship 2009 Report
The relays took part in the surroundings of Woodbank Park in Stockport on April 5th. Thanks to the hard work done by the road captain Alex Cran we just managed to get a team of 12 to make the short journey over to Stockport, where the sun was shining brightly and everyone was looking forward to getting hot and sweaty running around the park. Me, Paul Thompson, Foggy, Gaz Shaw and Jason Harbour went for a jog around the course to make sure we knew where we were going, and to see what surprises were in store. We came across part of the course, which I thought was a tough climb lasting about 200 metres of climb, Paul Thompson just laugh! Well to the start and Garry Shaw was first off. No one wanted to go first and I now know why. They started off as though they were running a 400-metre track race and to his credit Gary Shaw wasn’t going to let it get to him and ran his own race. Garry came home in 32nd place and handed over to our new boy Foggy who was running the short leg. I have noticed that Foggy had been improving over the last couple of months and he didn’t let the team down and ran a good leg to keep us in 32nd. Paul Thompson had problems with the saying “ Paul you’re running the long leg today of just over 4 miles” for those who knows Paul a long run for Paul is 20 odd miles over the rough stuff. Paul ran a great leg to bring us home in 29th. Next up was our Forrest. Forrest wasn’t keen to take part in the relays but Alex and me explained to him that we needed him on the short leg and he did himself proud with a solid run to come home a little back in 32nd. I was next up and I knew I wasn’t running too well (been walking during a few recent races) but I knew there were no hiding places. Things were going OK until that hill and I couldn’t give anymore and was going to start walking when suddenly Paul Thompson appears shouting words of encouragement. Thanks to Paul I carried on the finish with Clayton up to 28th. Kieron was next up and to his credit had been having a lot of trouble with his knees (training too hard for London??) and came home in 30th. Half way and only 5 places of a place at the nationals, we were thinking, “ Could we do it” Neil was next to run and I must say a big “Thank you” to Neil for running at the last minute and then rushing off back to work. Neil ran a hard leg and came home in 35th. Jason Harbour was next and it was nice to see Jason running well again (but Jason didn’t think so). Jason ran a good leg to keep us in 35th. Paul Targett ran next and pulled one place back to take us into 34th. Next up was the ex fell runner and new road runner Dave Edmondson. I have only known Dave for a couple of months and he’s a good laugh and I’m sure Dave will be on the road scene for years to come. Dave pulled a place back to finish in 33rd place and next up was Paul Archer who ran a good leg to finish in 34th place. We had save the last leg for our workhorse Tony Walker. Like most people who know Tony, I admire the likes of Tony for his 100% commitment to the club and running in general. Tony finished the day for us in 33rd place. The team did the club proud and had a enjoyable day out and a big “ Thank You “ goes to everyone who helped out. Unless we can get some younger members running with Clayton on the road and track, I can’t see us as a club taking part in these road relays any longer. Thanks Again Barry
