The History of
Clayton le moors Harriers

Founded 1922. Club name was Clayton Harriers. Initially a subsidiary branch of Bury AC until 1930 Continued under this name until 1947 when in order to distinguish the club from other \'Claytons\' the name Clayton–Le-Moors Harriers was adopted. Early years were mostly Cross Country running but the \'hiking section\' made forays into the hills on many occasions leading to the Clubs involvement in later years in the pioneering of amateur fell running. Club activities where limited due to WW2 but the club was reformed in 1946 and was successful in many cross country events over succeeding years. However by 1960 \"Clem\" had become the organiser of four fellraces which has now grown to no less than 25 fell races per year. Many other events such has The Lake District Mountain Trial..The Bob Graham Round. The Three Peaks Association. The High Peak Marathon. The Fell Runners Association. The Joss Naylor Challenge. have benefited from\"Clems\" involvement both from actual participation to organisational input. Clem was the first club to introduce lady members to fellrunning. Clem members have achieved County and National recognition. In 1930, 40 members met to decide the future of their club.Today there are 400 members. Their vision appears to have been rewarded.

Don Barton, Club President. April 2001.
