Sat 4th July, 2.00pm - Race 2, Fell Race, will follow the same route as the Uphill Mile, to the Golf Balls, taking the bridle way, rather than the road, over the last 250m. From there you go along the track towards May Well, before a sharp right turn to the Hameldon Hill trig. Follow the rutted path over the moor to the top of the ‘Dry Valley’ before rejoining the main track towards the Golf Balls and retracing your outward journey. About 4 miles.
Sunday 5th July, 11.00am - Race 3, Trail Race, about 5 miles along the trails around Clowbridge Reservoir. Weather permitting, there will be children’s (junior) races along the flat trail by the reservoir.
£5 for an individual race; £10 for the series - a bargain!
All proceeds to Mo Laney’s Malawi Charity
Parking is at the sailing club car park (pay and display - 50p?).
The Series Presentation and a buffet will be available at the Bull & Butcher Pub, about a mile away from the race venue, towards Burnley, from 12.30 onwards. If you want a buffet meal, please contact John Roche on 01282 431959, so that he can inform the pub about numbers.
The club AGM is on Thursday 27th August 2009 at Seedhill Cricket Club, Nelson. There will be the usual AGM 5K track race before the AGM (details to follow).
If anyone has any motions for the AGM they must be submitted to the Hon Sec before the 12th August 2009.
Summer Series 2009 Next Race Tues 21st July - Worston
23rd June Worsthorne Trueshopping Trail Race Results
21st July Uphill/Downhill Fell Race, Calf’s Head, Worston
25th Aug Tour of Hameldons, Peel Park Hotel, Accrington
1st Sept Ossy Moors, Plough Hotel, Oswaldtwistle
For members who are unfamiliar with the Summer Series, it is a series of (usually four) off-road races (max distance about 7 miles), open to Clayton members only, held on Tuesday training nights, at one of the usual training venues.
We try to make the races a bit different by awarding prizes according to how well individual members can estimate their time for the course (you’re not allowed to wear a watch!), as well as ‘first past the post’. This gives members who wish to run more slowly, or those who have no choice, a chance of winning a prize.
This year the downhill race has been replaced by the Uphill/Downhill Fell Race. This is in fact two races. The first half of this race will be a traditional first-past-the-post run from (just outside) Worston to the Pendle Trig. On arrival at the Trig, you will be allowed a rest before the downhill race - a time trial (setting off at 15 second intervals) back to your starting point. The evening’s activities will count as two separate races and both will have results based on estimated times, as well as fastest time.
The other races are at the same venues as in 2008.
Results for the Series will be based on best performances in 3 out of the 5 races. So, come on, if you’ve never taken part before, even if you do not usually run off road, give the Summer Series a try. You are under no pressure to race. Set a slow target time and have a jog round. The races are all on a Tuesday night - you’d be training anyway!
As an extra incentive for members to participate in the Summer Series, we will donate any profits to Mo Laney’s Malawi Charity Fund.
Summer Training 2009 (April - September) Tuesday training in July from Worston (Near Downham), 7:00pm
Tuesday training in July from Worston (Near Downham), 7:00pm
All members are welcome to take part in the Tuesday Summer Runs, which are on the fells. The usual arrangement is for three groups to run from each venue for between one and two hours, although this can vary according to numbers, weather and what members have done at the weekend.
If you are new to the Club/summer training runs/fell running, please make yourself known to a Committee member or group leader before the run and we will attempt to place you in the most appropriate group.
All members should ensure that they carry some emergency/extra clothing with them on the run: wind(water)-proof top, over trousers, hat and gloves. The weather can change very quickly on the fells. (It invariably snows on Pendle in April!) If you, or someone else in the group has an accident, you can very quickly become cold or hyperthermic, even on the most pleasant of evenings. It’s also a good idea to carry a drink and some emergency food (sweets, chocolate bar), in case you are out longer than you expect- it has been known for a group leader to get carried away occasionally.
Thursday Training is from either -

Club Championship 2009 Next Race Sat 18th July, Ingleborough Fell Race

Burnley Mountaineering Club currently have 6 CLEM members and at least 6 ex members who are members of our club. It is a logical step as runners slow down or are injured we give the opportunity to access the mountains and walk or run at their own pace either by themselves or with other walkers. As long as the route book is filled in each individual can do their own thing including linear walks/runs, a change of clothes can be left on the coach.
Apart from the monthly trip they also arrange weekends in Climbing huts and hostels etc -

Erosion on Pendle
The Committee has recently discussed the problem of erosion on Pendle Hill.
A particular area of concern is the path that has appeared on the Full Tour route. The erosion is particularly bad on the ‘Geronimo’ descent into Ogden and the descent to checkpoint 9, above the Downham Road Bridge (before the final ascent up the Big End).
But there are other scars: Spence Moor (above Churn Clough Reservoir), the ‘Bunny Run’ off Deerstones, Buttock Fell.
We appreciate that it is not just CleM members who use these routes or, for that matter, just runners. However, we feel that when we are out on Pendle, especially in large groups, we should try to avoid causing erosion, or making it worse. Please consider your routes and the possible impact on the landscape when you are planning routes on Pendle.
